LENT: God who Receives the Final Breath

Standard

Luke 23:44-49

God who Receives the Final Breath,

When the moment comes for me to breathe my last breath, be present, God who gave me my first one.  Grant me weakness enough to release my grip and strength enough to trust your presence in the process.

Receive my spirit for safekeeping and then, remain present for whomever surrounds my then spirit-less flesh.  Unleash your power made real in intimate sorrow.

Whenever it comes, may I know that I gave thanks for every breath as it came so that the last one comes to you as abundant gratitude for creation’s extravagance and love’s magnitude.

In the name of the One whose final breath was but the beginning, I pray.

Amen.
